KVM Virtualisation on Ubuntu 14.04 – Part 1

This is a quick post on how to configure an Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) server as a virtualisation host.

Firstly, install the virtualisation host package

sudo apt install virt-host^ -y

Create a new bridged interface, this will allow us to connect our virtual machines to our external network, this can be done by editing /etc/network/interfaces

Rename your existing network interface to br0, making a note of the original name, in my case eth0

auto br0
iface br0 inet static

Connect the new bridged interface to your original physical interface

        bridge_ports eth0

Add the additional bridge configuration settings

        bridge_fd 9
        bridge_hello 2
        bridge_maxage 12
        bridge_stp off

Save and close the file

Here is my interfaces file for reference
